Men’s Soccer at the Olympics
By Mark Herlan

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the men’s soccer tournament will take place throughout the two weeks at various venues around the UK. Because the Olympics take place in the same year as major tournaments such as the UEFA European Championships, participating countries can use only three players over the age of 23. As such, the Olympics primarily functions as a youth tournament where teams benefit from the experience of a handful of senior players.

The 2012 Olympics features teams from six continents and includes a team representing Great Britain for the first time in more than 50 years. In the group stages, Great Britain and Senegal moved on from a contested Group A, while Mexico and South Korea both went undefeated to advance from Group B. Brazil and Egypt emerged from Group C while Japan and Honduras surprisingly topped a strong Group D, which included perennial soccer powerhouse Spain.
