As City Manager for the City of Steamboat Springs, in Colorado, Jon Roberts holds responsibility for daily administrative functions and oversees a number of employees. Since assuming his role, Roberts has reduced expenses by more than 40 percent and purchased an open-space project encompassing nearly 600 acres. He has also secured more than $12 million in funding; hired several directors, including those responsible for planning and finance; and boosted Steamboat Springs' credit rating, according to Moody's Investors Service, Inc.
Before coming to Steamboat Springs in 2009, Roberts gained invaluable experience as the City Manager of Victorville, California, a role he held for nearly a decade. There, he met the needs of a population base that exceeded 100,000 and held oversight for the work of 660 employees. In his leadership role, he employed redevelopment techniques and offered economic incentives to attract a series of Fortune 500 firms, and he drastically increased employment figures for minorities and women. Furthermore, he established the Victorville Water District and created more than 1,200 housing units for families with moderate or low household incomes. Before assuming his first post as a city manager, he spent years with the City of Victorville as a City Engineer.
In other prior experience, Jon Roberts served as Project Superintendent for Peter Kiewit Sons’ and as Field Engineer with the City of San Bernardino. He completed his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and has undertaken coursework toward a Master of Business Administration through Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide. A committed member of his profession, he belongs to organizations such as the International City Managers Association, and he holds licensure as a land surveyor and civil engineer.
