A multiple-year winner (2008 and 2011) of Pasadena Weekly’s Best Architect award, he has a long history of serving home and building owners in, Pasadena, San Marino, La Canada, Hollywood, West Los Angeles and beyond. One notable project was a mountain estate in Aspen, Colorado, that he modeled after historic mining structures and U.S. Forest Service buildings of the 1930s and ‘40s. Another Coane original, a modern residence in La Cañada Flintridge, California, features a unique curved metal roof and simple yet elegant materials and style throughout.
James Coane founded his Pasadena firm in 1994 after earning a Bachelor of Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Today, he leads a multifunctional team of architects, engineers, interior designers, and technicians in the design of custom homes, residential estates, historic building renovations and expansions, multifamily residences, retail, small commercial structures, and apartment and corporate building interiors. Mr. Coane maintains involvement in all stages of his projects, from initial inception and design development to permitting, construction support, and supervision.
In helping clients to achieve their overall design and functionality objectives, Mr. Coane and his senior staff members create and present three-dimensional models, drawings, and renderings to illustrate their various ideas and concepts. Once the client signs off on a final design, the team develops construction drawings, engages in permitting and bidding, and assists in the selection of a contractor or project manager.
Over the years, Mr. Coane’s firm has designed projects throughout California, including in Newport Beach and San Diego, as well as in Aspen Colorado. The firm also has completed work in Beijing, China.
In recognition of his achievements, James Coane received an award from the American Institute of Architects. Additionally, his finished projects have been featured in Architectural Digest, Kitchen Trends magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and many other publications.
