About him

Developing new business and expanding his company’s customer base are what Howard Woodie McDuffie does best. In 1980, after the deregulation of the tank-truck industry, Mr. McDuffie helped secure new customers and ensure continuous operation of the long-haul tank-truck business at Miller Transporters in Jackson, Mississippi. Woodie McDuffie then started the company’s telemarketing department in 1987 and its intermodal department in 1989, developing rail-to-truck transloading operations in Brandon, Mississippi, for both liquid- and- dry-bulk distribution.

As president of Miller Intermodal Logistics Services (MILS) from 1994 to 2006, Mr. McDuffie created a network of global agents. The company handled more than 250 tank containers per month door-to-door in more than 52 countries, all 50 U.S. states, and two U.S. territories. Over the course of 12 years, Mr. McDuffie grew this business to bring in more than $10 million in revenue.

The shipping business changed in 1999, when an increase in ocean rates and decrease in tank-container rates led MILS to stop overseas shipping. Mr. McDuffie responded by shifting the company’s attention to leasing tank containers, which created consistent profits. MILS now manages shipper-owned containers for third parties, and its fleet is in full operation. Additionally, as manager of Miller Leasing, Mr. McDuffie assumed control of a fleet of storage tanks, more than doubling its size during his tenure.

Woodie McDuffie graduated from Mississippi College, in Clinton, in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. In addition to his role as a business leader, Mr. McDuffie also makes time for charitable activities, such as Habitat for Humanity and the Boy Scouts of America, and is active in the United Methodist Church. He enjoys fishing, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren.
