A family physician and occupational medicine specialist with more than two decades of experience in his field, Dr. Cedric Fernando currently serves as Medical Director in the Occupational Health Department at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital in Erwin, Tennessee. Commanding a long and impressive academic and professional background, Dr. Cedric Fernando laid the educative foundations for his career as a student at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. Following receipt of his Doctor of Medicine from the university, Dr. Cedric Fernando began a yearlong internship, followed by a three-year residency in family medicine at the East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine. An exemplary student both inside and outside of the classroom, Dr. Cedric Fernando won the 1984 Outstanding Intern Award, ascended to the rank of Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor in 1986, and earned the 1987 Chairman’s Leadership Award during his internship and residency. At the end of this period, Dr. Cedric Fernando entered into a highly diversified career in family medicine, with notable work as a practitioner, teacher, and medical review officer (MRO). Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Cedric Fernando ensures currency with the latest developments in his field through additional memberships in the American Academy of Family Medicine (AAFM), the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians (TNAFP), and the American Association of Medical Review Officers (AAMRO). In his capacity as a teacher, Dr. Cedric Fernando has spent more than 20 years as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, providing hands-on instruction to students and residents alike. A seasoned medical review officer as well, Dr. Cedric Fernando regularly conducts workplace drug testing in a variety of industries.
