Brion Applegate

Since 1994, Brion Applegate has been founder and senior managing director of Spectrum Equity. Located in Boston and Menlo Park, California, Applegate's company has developed six private equity funds with nearly $5 billion in capital. Utilizing his experience in private equity and the financial markets, Brion Applegate focuses on businesses in the information economy, particularly ones involved with wireless technologies, computer software, media, and information technology. When considering potential new investments, Brion Applegate chooses firms with healthy operating margins and franchise customer loyalty.

High-net-worth parties turn to Brion Applegate's company to enhance their portfolios. Spectrum Equity generally places between $25 million and $100 million into North American, Australian, and Western European companies such as AMC Entertainment Inc.; Bug Music, Inc.; Apprise Media, LLC; and ARROWHEAD General Insurance Agency, Inc. The company invests either as a minority or majority investor, providing equity capital in a wide variety of transactions including: leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations and dividends, acquisitions, and secondary share purchases.

Before establishing Spectrum Equity, Brion Applegate spent 15 years in private equity at TA Associates, Inc., and Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. Renowned for his financial insights, Applegate also is a director with Local Insight Media Holdings, Inc., and Nassau Broadcasting Partners, L.P. At other points, he sat on the boards of directors for H.O. Systems Inc.; Pricellular Corporation; CBD Media LLC; and American Cellular Corporation.

Prior to entering the business world, Brion Applegate attended Colgate University and acquired a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. Today, he holds the rank of trustee with the institution and assists with its athletics and endowment programs. Subsequently, Applegate received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
