A respected physician with nearly 15 years of experience, Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., has engaged in several research initiatives along with helping patients as a board-certified ophthalmologist trained in vitreo-retinal surgery. While a student in the prestigious Advanced (Accelerated) Medical Scholars Program at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and LSU School of Medicine, Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan presented his research on endothelial nitric oxide release induced by acetylcholine in a pulmonary artery endothelial cell column model of the vasculature at the LSU Medical Center Research Forum. The following year, Dr. Khan returned to the event with his work on oxidative stress causing up-regulation of PMN adhesion via transcription factor NF-kB.
Several months into his residency in ophthalmology at LSU Health Sciences Center, Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., attended the LSU Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology Alumni Day with a report on the diabetic screening clinic at LSU Eye Center, earning a John Henderson, M.D., Best Resident Research Presentation Award. At the next LSU Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology Alumni Day, Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., discussed factors influencing development of interferon retinopathy. In 2002, Dr. Khan presented his study involving beta radiation in the treatment of ophthalmic disease.
Along with contributing to the field ophthalmology with research, Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., has provided surgical and medical care to patients dealing with cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, diabetic eye disease and various other retinal eye conditions. Additionally, he gained practical medical experience and provided voluntary medical services during a trip to India before the start of his fellowship in vitreous-retina surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. During this trip, Dr. Khan worked with other ophthalmologists in cataract camps in the most poverty-stricken, rural areas of the country. Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., has also routinely taught other doctors, fellows, residents and medical students about his field while conducting his duties as an Attending/Staff Physician with the Ochsner Clinic Foundation. Other medical centers that have benefited from the expertise of Abdul Rasheed Khan, M.D., include Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma, Louisiana and the Vitreo-Retinal Institute in Baton Rouge. While serving at the Baton Rouge facility, the Consumers' Research Council of America; Cambridge Who's Who Registry of Executives, Professionals, and Entrepreneurs; and Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., presented Dr. Khan with several accolades. Currently, Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan works in private practice in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and the Dallas Metroplex areas.
